On the new release many of the intruments sound hollow artificial and/or dry. Once beautiful instruments like tinkle bell are now unusable. Lots of balance issues have been resolved but at the expense of tone. Is there a way you could do something like a soundfonts interface so people could upload the old instruments or new ones?

It is not about TuxGuitar at all.
Instruments are played with Java soundbank or your system synthesizer. Check out Sound Settings and find your old setup, nothing else has changed.
