I clicked on the color wheel, selected a greenish color, and it showed up as black.

Nevermind - figured it out, PEBKAC.
The colorwhile has a brightness slider on the right, and the initial position of this slider is always down, which is very dark, so it was black.
I'd suggest instead using an initial position close to the top (very bright).
