Hi Harry,
I listened to a sample of sounds from the Microsoft Midi Mapper and the Java Sound Synthesizer and didn't perceive a significant difference (I would judge Midi Mapper to be be better in that sounds seem more natural). Are you saying the Java Sound Synthesizer is unacceptably bad? Or just that you would prefer Microsoft Midi Mapper?
Have you checked whether the Windows Media Player can play midi files? If it does this indicates that Midi Mapper is working. If it doesn't then this might indicates there is problem with TuxGuitar.
If the midi fails to play on the media player then you should check the installation of the midi driver. For Windows XP (which I presume you are using) you can do this via the Control Panel. This link will give you more details: http://www.techrepublic.com/article/fix-midi-or-wav-file-problems-in-windows-xp/1054927
For Windows Vista and Windows 7 I understand that it is no longer possible to configure the midi driver via the control panel and you have to do this via the Windows Registry. You don't really want to make any changes to the Windows Registry unless you are certain you know what you are doing. There are third party apps that individuals have developed to help address midi issues e.g Windows Vista Middi Mapper Control Panel & Vista Midi Fix. An internet search will locate this apps but I have no experience of either so cannot recommend them.
If you solve your problem then don't forget to post the solution.
If you need further help then you need to give more information about your os and the problem you are experiencing.
Kind regards,
Ignatz
