Hello,
I tried the native release at first and I had no sound, too. (Ubuntu 9.04) (javax...Exception:Audio Device Unavailable).
Then I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu-x86 Binary Package and this release is working at me, I have sound.

You have to install the "timidity" (universe) package from Synaptic package manager. After that run TuxGuitar, go to Tools - Settings - Sound and select "TiMidity port 128:0" in "MIDI-Port".
