Sorry if this has been asked a million times but I just downloaded TuxGuitar. And I figured everything out except for when I fill up the bar that you're given straight away I can't figure out how to make new bars. Can someone explain this to me?

There are 2 ways to add measures:
1: from menu "Measure -> Add Measure"
2: if you are using the keys "UP | DOWN | LEFT | RIGHT" to navigate the tablature,
you can just go to the end of measure and press "RIGHT" and a new measure will automatically added.
