These are "MIDI Channels".
On MIDI Protocol, all is managed by channels.
I mean, when you "load an instrument" you do it on the channel ( you can't load an instrument for a track ).
Or When you change the volume, you do it on the channel..etc (the list is big)...
Allmost MIDI Synthesizers, as default have a maximum of 16 channels.. this means, that you "can't" load more than 16 different instruments.
TuxGuitar, automaticall adds 2 channels for each track (with percussion channel exception that is allways "9" )
the first channel for a track, is for normal notes, while the second is for "effects" (one more time, on MIDI you can't set a pitchbend to a note.. you do it to a channel.. so you need to have a different effect channel to play effects without apply it to other notes on same chord )
This is why "Free VS Link".
As default you have these channels managed by tuxguitar, but, if you need more tracks, you can manually manage them.
e.g: if you have a track that not have effects or things like, you can set channel and effect channel with same number. so in this case you'll use only 1 channel instead of 2.
if you have a lot of tracks, but some tracks uses same instruments, you can "link" them.
track 1 = piano | track 2 = piano,
you can use same channel for both tracks.. so you'll get more free channels for other tracks.
If you do this example, you'll see what i'm talking about.
1_ link 2 tracks to use same channel.
2_ change the volume of one of these tracks
3_ take a look to the volume of the other track. you'll see it will change too.
