I guess you are running Windows. TuxGuitar plays system MIDI sounds, so you actually need another synthesizer. Try in Control Panel->Sounds->MIDI (or something like that).
You can also try to install some software synth daemon (like FluidSynth for Windows) which can use different soundbanks/soundfonts.

no...
this is the reason that i ask...
i'm running ubuntu 8.04...
when i had windows i worked with guitar pro...the sound was very good for a midi...
now... when i'm using ubuntu... i work with tuxguitar and the midi sound is not the same... it's even bad if the compare with the windows sound...
i'm looking for a midi sounds or package for the tuxguitar in linux so i can change this midi sounds...

tuxguitar don't play sounds.
it just connect to a synthesizer, and it do the work.
if you have ubuntu, you can install "timidity"
then on tuxguitar, go to "Tools -> Settings : Sound" and select the timidity port 128:0 on "MIDI Port" drop down select.

It's because you have an oldest version of tuxguitar.
You'll need to upgrade it to 1.0 to get alsa native sounds.
or install tuxguitar-alsa for your version.

I'm on windows 98 at the moment and tux guitar has a file named soundbank.gm at tuxrtlibaudio and its about 4 kb. I downloaded a different file (about 4 megs) called soundbank-deluxe.gm from a java midi suite support site. Obviously I was hoping to get significantly better sounds, but there was no change, even when I got rid of the (what I assume to be) default soundbank file.
It seems to me like that (had it worked) would be what T.S.P was talking about. What does that file really do if it's not tux's general midi soundbank?

It is not only for TuxGuitar, it is soundbank for whole Java MIDI.
Anyway if you don't see ANY change, then you don't use that soundbank. You can specify .GM file in Tools->Plugins->TuxGuitar-JSA settings. But you won't get any drastic improvement, since 4MB for soundbank isn't that big.
Try using the system MIDI synth and combine it with software synthesizer if you don't have better sound card.
