Everyone has to eat so people's time costs money, even if they are doing opensource software. I have donated just a little money, the exact amount that I could afford without thinking twice but I intend to keep doing it from time to time for as long as I'm using the software. There's a nice feeling about paying software developers directly. Having had a look at the free and non-free alternatives I think TuxGuitar is awesome.
