I've been using TuxGuitar for a few days now and find it very good. Much better than I expected. It actually sounds better than GP, with Microsoft Midi sequencer, if tuxguitar is used with timidity. The only thing that I found lacking is support for the .gtp (the really old GP tabs) file format, but I'm guessing you didn't get the specs for that. I just fetched some newer tabs to work around that. :)
Big thanks for the effort.
Cheers!

TuxGuitar supports (imports) all the old Guitar Pro files. It just can't save in old GP formats (GP3 is the oldest GP output format).
Did you try?

As Johnny say, tuxguitar has support for load .gtp files.
Do you have the latest tuxguitar version ??
if yes, and you couldn't open any .gtp file, please send me that file to se what's the problem.

$ apt-cache policy tuxguitar
tuxguitar:
Installed: 0.9.1-ubuntu-7.04-1
Candidate: 0.9.1-ubuntu-7.04-1
This is the version in which I can't open .gtp files. It doesn't show them in the "Open" browser and also doesn't open the .gtp file if it is specified explicitly in the "Location" input field. Since it doesn't show up in the "Open" browser I take it as normal behavior for this version. If I am indeed wrong then tell me your e-mail address and I'll send you a file that didn't work.

you have an oldest ( 0.9.1 ) version of tuxguitar.
that version don't have support for *.gtp and *.gp5 (v5.10) file formats.
I suggest you download the latest 1.0-rc3 version of tuxguitar.

I just upgraded and I just gotta say: WOW!
I can open all my tabs and the interface looks really good! All the icons on the buttons are very stylish and the whole look of the program is sleek and cool. Now I don't have to reboot into Windows to open tabs with GP, I'm amazed! :D
Great effort and good job!
Ps. If I may suggest one thing. When F6 is pressed in Guitar Pro you get a dialog showing the tuning in which the song is tabulated and you have the option to play the notes to tune the guitar to the same tuning. This dialog is already in TuxGuitar (Track > Properties) but it's not possible to play the notes. Is that something that you would consider to add? It might also be cool to have a list of some tunings aswell. :)
Cheers,
Julius Thor

This is really a fine piece of work, and I'm making it a requirement for all my students (eventually replacing PowerTab). Good job so far!
