Although you can resize the fonts under Tools|Settings (F7 shortcut), you have to edit a configuration file to increase the space (literally pixels) between the tab and staff lines. Find this file:
C:Documents and Settings.tuxguitar-1.2config.properties
Use Notepad or Wordpad to add these two lines.
tab.line-spacing=20
score.line-spacing=20
I think someone mentioned that the default values were 8, so mess around. What works depends on your display resolution/size and your eye-sight! I'm using 1024 x 768 on a 42" TV, but I'm almost 60. (Don't make fun of the handicapped!)
I also found it useful to get rid of most of those tool bars at the top again via Tools|Settings (F7 shortcut). That will allow for a larger work area.
